Reduce, reuse, recycle. Hopefully, this is a sentiment you’ve heard many times. You have to make a concerted effort to think green. While those three words inspire many to think about the long-term health of our planet and its resources. Many of us are driven by convenience and cost, thinking it would be too hard or unaffordable to adapt.

1. BUY LESS

The best news about your decision to be a conscious consumer is that you’re going to save a lot of money. It turns out that buying less is easier than it seems. My most important “buy less” resources are free, secondhand, and long-term purchases. Leaving a margin in your finances, a healthy space between your income and your expenses, means you have more money to devote to better goods.

2. SHOP ETHICAL, NOT JUST SUSTAINABLE

Sustainability and conscious consumption aren’t just about your carbon footprint. It’s also about using your purchasing and consumption power to make the world a more equitable place for everyone.

3. APPLAUD SMALL CHANGES

When you first begin to open your eyes to the changes that need to take place in your shopping choices and lifestyle, you may experience a sort of consumer paralysis. There is too much that needs doing, you’ll never be able to manage it all. That is why you must reinforce and encourage your and others’ small changes.

4. INVEST IN THE LONG-TERM

The sustainability movement often gets a bad reputation for being prohibitively expensive.
Of course, if you buy less or buy secondhand, this isn’t the case. If you’re buying new, it’s still not as pricey as it looks. Sustainable products are often higher upfront investments, but that’s because they save you a lot of money down the road.
